Preparing for a Successful Interview

The purpose of a job interview is for you and the practice to get to know each other and find out if there is a good fit of skills, experience, personal and professional needs. This is your opportunity to market yourself to the practice. This could be your only chance to “sell” yourself so you should plan the actions you will take toward the career you are seeking beforehand. Successful interviews require preparation and securing employment requires well planned follow-up action. The following guidelines will foster robust dialogue to help you achieve these objectives.

Practice answering questions you may be asked in the interview. Certain questions are frequently asked during interviews. Be sure to have answers prepared for questions such as:

•  How would you describe yourself?
•  What are your strengths and weaknesses?
•  Where do you see yourself in five years?
•  Why should we hire you instead of other applicants?
•  What do you know about our practice?

Preparing your responses in advance will help you more effectively articulate the most important information you want to communicate.

Quantify your accomplishments. There are numerous candidates on the job market today and you need to differentiate yourself from them. Write down how you achieved your accomplishments. This exercise will allow you to discuss your accomplishments, previous work history, knowledge, skills, and abilities clearly and concisely.

Wrapping Up your interview can be just as important as preparing for the interview. To leave the interviewer with a great last impression, do the following:

  • Smile
  • Shake hands
  • Ask for the job
  • Ask when it is appropriate to follow-up
  • Thank them for their time

Follow-up after every interview you have. Within 24 hours after the interview send a thank you letter. Email can be used but a hand-written (or professionally typed) note mailed to the interviewer is more thoughtful and personable. The content should thank them for interviewing you, express your interest in the position and convey that you are eagerly waiting to hear from the practice. If you interviewed with more than one person send each of them a personalized note.
