Preparing a Solid Resume
The best resume doesn't guarantee you the job, but a poorly crafted resume can take you completely out of the running. Your resume helps prospective employers develop their critical first impression of you. It's a "calling card" that plays a crucial role in securing offers.
When developing your resume,
- Be 100% accurate and truthful about all data on your resume including dates, education, experience, and knowledge.
- Be clear in your thoughts and descriptions. Reviewing job descriptions for positions similar to what you are applying for will help with appropriate language.
- Customize your resume to focus your skills and qualifications to the position you are applying for.
- Incorporating bulleted statements will make your resume easier to read and draw attentions key information.
- Stay away from exotic fonts. Business appropriate fonts such as Arial and Times New Roman are better choices. Keep a streamlined and professional look.
- Do not overcrowd the page. Make good use of margins and spacing. A resume should be visually pleasing.
- Begin sentence s w ith action verbs." Avoid lofty, redundant language, puns and wordplays.
- Describe significant contributions at your current and previous positions and how they impacted the company's operation and bottom line.
- Include software (including version numbers) you have acquired proficiency with.
- List any professional certifications or designations you have achieved or are working towards such as CPA, CMA etc.
- List involvement with relevant professional and civic associations.
- Do not include personal information such as social security number, number of children, marital status, and hobbies.
- Refrain from the overuse of acronyms and abbreviations.
- Proofread for errors in typing, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Make sure legibility is not diluted when faxed. Problems can occur with poor font selection, font size, and use of colored paper. Fax yourself a test copy.
- Continually review and update your resume to reflect new skills gained.
Keep in mind that many larger employers and recruiting firms only view resumes via contact management software. Qualified candidates are selected based on search queries that relate to the available opening. Incorporating key words/phrases that relate to the job function s w ill help increase the probability of your resume being reviewed.
